The 25-year-old is highly regarded by MLS fans and a move to Europe has been expected for some time.

Arriola has impressed at right-back since joining DC United in 2018. His attacking flair has drawn particular attention – in 72 appearances, he has scored 14 goals and eight assists.

Arriola also showed his offensive flair on the international stage with the United States. In 35 appearances for his country, he has scored eight times.

In a statement on the club website, DC United General Manager Dave Kasper said: “We spoke with Paul and we understand how exciting this step is for him in his professional career.

“We wish Paul the best of luck and hope he will join our club.”

Steve Cooper’s side have no option to buy the 25-year-old.

Second arrival from right-back

Swansea has also confirmed the arrival of Kieron Freeman, who is also a right-back, for an undisclosed fee. The 28-year-old will provide additional coverage to first-choice Connor Roberts.

Freeman began his career with Nottingham Forest in 2011, making his debut in a League Cup victory over the Wycombe Wanderers.

After loans with Mansfield Town and Notts County, Freeman joined rivals Forest, Derby County 2012. However, a move to Pride Park was not a success, as he only made 27 appearances on a three-year period.

Freeman then joined Sheffield united after a first loan in the 2013/14 season. He made 121 appearances for the Blades before being released last summer.
