Elyctis readers play a key role in verifying electronic identity documents, making the European Covid green pass more secure

European Covid Green Pass is checked and identity is verified using an Elyctis reader at the entrance to a place in the Netherlands

Alexandre Joly, CEO of Elyctis, said: “Checking a barcode offline without identity verification is an incredibly light step on the part of the European authorities. We are happy to collaborate with ScanID to bring better security in this verification for the health of all European citizens.

The European Covid Green Pass has become the key to many events in our life. It is now compulsory in most European countries to access public transport, restaurants, bars, cinemas, stadiums, and even entire districts of certain cities. However, in most cases the Green Pass is read offline without identity verification, which opens the door to many fraud attempts. For example, people use a screenshot of the QR code or just use another person’s QR code.

To combat this problem, the Dutch government has decided that it is now mandatory to verify the identity of the owner of the Green Pass each time it is used. ScanID, Dutch systems integrator and long-time Elyctis partner, has built a solution that uses an Elyctis ID BOX One 121 to read the identity of each Green Pass holder. The app is able to support all types of IDs including, of course, Dutch national ID cards and driving licenses, as well as ePassports and many other European documents from electronic identity. The Elyctis ID BOX One reads the MRZ of the document and uses its content to access the biographical data of the chip: name and first name, month and year of birth, sex and nationality. At the same time, a reader accesses the data of the QR-code presented by the user, verifies his certificate and collects the same data. Access is only granted if the QR-code allows it and if the data correspond between the e-ID document and the Green Pass.

In addition to the European standard Green Pass, the ScanID application is able to read national Covid passes issued by health authorities in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. Additionally, as some QR codes are known to be counterfeit, the app checks the read against a blacklist before allowing access to customers. As the Green Pass is only valid for a limited time, the application checks whether the dates of vaccination, test or recovery certificate comply with official regulations.

The system is used in a wide variety of circumstances. In some cases, restaurants, bars and other places directly verify the Covid Pass and the identity of customers, in other contexts such as markets, a single access point is set up where the Covid Pass and the identity people are verified before they are issued a wristband that they can use to access various establishments.

Martijn van Ark, ScanID R&D Tech Lead, adds: “With the combination of the Elyctis ID BOX One readers and our app, we are proud to say that we are making accessing various locations in the Netherlands safer and easier.
